yes, Thoreau's "experiment" was much more profound. The deeper I dive, the more fascinated I am. I found another quote that really made me think:

"Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience, then? I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward"

So, he was to a degree anti-system, where the system stopped making sense for him. This is a high level of self-awareness and critical thinking.
