In this episode I challenge the widely accepted protein recommendation of 0.8g of protein per kg bodyweight, arguing it is insufficient for active individuals who regularly stress their bodies through physical work or training. Instead, research-backed needs of 1.5 to 1.7g/kg are presented as essential for proper recovery, muscle repair, and sustained energy.
This creates a practical dilemma for minimalists: how to meet higher protein demands without complicating life or compromising values around sustainability and simplicity.
I explore the trade-off between nutrient density and environmental footprint, and highligh that while animal products offer complete, efficient nutrition, they come with ecological costs. Plant-based diets, on the other hand, require more planning and are not always as “clean” as assumed due to global supply chains. Rejecting rigid dietary ideologies, in this episode I advocate for an adaptable, locally sourced, whole-food approach — prioritizing high-quality protein, seasonality, and practical choices over perfection.
Ultimately, we should align our nutrition with both our physical needs and environmental values.
